Modi’s Panic and the Desperate Politics of ‘Distraction’

Narendra Modi is acting like a man in absolute panic. He has good reason to be afraid for his political future. The winds of political change are blowing all around us. The mood of the electorate is shifting. There is anger at the rising prices, unchecked unemployment and the arrogance of the Modi Sarkar. All indications are that Modi ji’s BJP will get wiped out in the upcoming State elections. The opposition, led by the Congress Party is united, resurgent and determined to remove Modi ji from Delhi. Modi ji can no longer manage the dissent within the BJP and there is desertion in their ranks.

In his panic, Modi ji has been shooting off a steady stream of distractions in a desperate attempt to divert the attention of the people from his abject failures. He floated the jumla of a ‘Uniform Civil Code’ but his government has provided no draft bill or any details of what this might include. Then he floated the notion of ‘One Nation, One Election’ with no details of what this would mean, how it would be achieved and why it was necessary. Then one day, he decided that ‘India’ is not an acceptable name and we should only be called ‘Bharat’. He then went on to spend hundreds of crores of the Nation’s money to host the G20 leaders in Delhi for a Party that was more about his own ego than India’s interest. Finally, he has introduced a bill to reserve seats for women in Parliament but will in effect change nothing because his government has not allowed the census to be conducted. Jumlas, jumlas and more jumlas!

But India will not be fooled by his theatrics any more. The mood of the Country was clearly visible in the mega rally in Hyderabad where lacs of people came out to support the Congress Party in Telangana. Change is coming. The Congress will triumph in the upcoming state elections and the National elections next year. The long dark night of ten years will soon come to an end. Jai Congress. Jai Hind. Jai Jagat.
