13 Killed, Many Injured After Terrorists Open Fire in Assam’s Kokrajhar

Kokrajhar: More than a dozen people were killed and many injured after two terrorists in army uniform opened fire at a crowded market near Assam’s Kokrajhar town. The terrorists came in an auto-rickshaw and started firing at a weekly market at Balajan Tiniali, around 220 km from Guwahati. One of the attackers also threw a grenade, setting off a fire at a building.

The authorities have blamed the outlawed National Democratic Front of Bodoland, which fought a violent decades-long campaign for a separate homeland for the region’s ethnic Bodo people. Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi has strongly condemned the militant attack on a weekly market at Balajan Tinali in Assam and extended her condolences to the families of the thirteen innocent victims.

Describing the attack as mindless and dastardly, she stressed that the perpetrators of such acts that target innocent and unsuspecting common people shall be dealt with in the severest possible manner. Hoping that immediate relief measures were being taken, Smt. Gandhi instructed the Assam PCC and the frontals to reach out to the injured and bereaved with all possible assistance. In a separate message Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi said “News of the terror attack in Kokrajhar, Assam extremely worrying. My thoughts & prayers are with the families of the victims.
