Congress President shocked over Varanasi stampede
New Delhi: 24 persons, 20 of them women, were killed and more than 50 injured in a stampede on an overcrowded bridge on the outskirts of Varanasi on 15 th October, 2016. The incident took place on the famous Rajghat bridge in Varanasi when a large number of followers of the Jai Gurudev cult, were on their way to a two-day camp at Domri village along the banks of the Ganga. In a message by the Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has expressed shock and grief on shocking deaths and injuries in a stampede in Varanasi. Extending her condolences to the families of the deceased, Smt. Gandhi hoped that the concerned authorities were providing adequate medical relief and compensation to the victims. She has instructed the UPCC, Varanasi DCC and Congress workers to provide all possible assistance to the people.
In a separate message, Congress vice-president, Shri Rahul Gandhi shocked and deeply saddened to learn of the stampede in Varanasi. And said “My heartfelt condolences to families of the victims of this tragic incident” and the party’s Chief Ministerial candidate Smt. Sheila Dikshit also offered her condolences.
