“Every citizen of India, including our nearly 20 million Catholics, take immense pride and joy on the recognition by your Holiness and the Catholic Church of Mother Teresa’s profound nobility of soul, purity of purpose, and service to God through service to humanity.
The canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa is an occasion for all Indians to give deep thanks that she spent her life in India, serving the poorest and the neediest in our land. It is an occasion for us to draw inspiration from her life of selfless service; to learn from her how to practice compassion and loving kindness in our everyday lives; and to remind us that it is our foremost duty to do whatever we can to help ease the suffering and pain of our fellow human beings.
For the countless people whose suffering and pain Mother Teresa eased, whose last hours on earth she filled with love, the ground she walked on became hallowed ground. She remains one of the most revered, loved and admired figures in India, which gave her its highest award, the Bharat Ratna (the Jewel of India).
Margaret Alva and Louzinho Faleiro will represent the Congress Party at the canonization ceremony of Mother Teresa. If I had not been unwell, I too would have been there to witness this sacred ceremony, and to pay my humble homage to the woman who was the very embodiment of boundless compassion, mercy and grace.”
Later, Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi released a message on 4th September, 2016 and hailed the Canonization of Mother Teresa as the recognition of service to poorest of poor, dying and destitute.
Describing the life of Mother Teresa as an epitome of grace, compassion and love, Smt. Sonia Gandhi said that her saintly life will forever inspire humanity to commit to the cause of those who have no voice, no community, no home, no care and no love.
Wishing the Missionaries of Charity great success, Smt. Sonia Gandhi stressed that every Indian took great pride in the life, work and sainthood of Mother Teresa and shall be always grateful for her service.
In a separate message, Congress Vice President, Shri Rahul Gandhi said, “Mother Teresa-A symbol of service & compassion. She showed the world the extraordinary power of love. We celebrate today that enduring legacy of love.”
