The age-old picture of Bapu sitting with his charkha is a memory which springs with it an emotion because it brings back the memory of the struggle for independence by peaceful means unparalleled before in history and for which Mahatma Gandhi enjoys universal respect across the world.
The movement for Khadi was started as a means of defiance when the British were coercing Indians to buy their over priced textiles that were causing hardship to the poor in the country. Khadi is a handspun and hand-woven cloth that the masses of India were advocated to weave for themselves on the Charkha at their homes. In 1918 Mahatma Gandhi spread this movement and it caught the imagination of the masses and spread like wild fire. It became the symbol of defiance and patriotism and also became especially the uniform of the political class.
The Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi tweeted that Modiwas trying to take credit for the promotion of Khadi and village industries, an ideawhich had been close to the heart of the Father of the Nation, as he had allegedly doneafter India’s spacecraft Mangalayaan landed on the Mars. Narender Modi ji would like to replicate and get himself photographed but he cannot bring the emotion that Gandhi ji brings in his picture weaving Khadi with a charkha or for that matter when he was leading the Dandi march. Wonder, when the nation would see the PM replicating the Dandi March.
Modi ji has made it a habit to claim the brilliance of others as his own and this picture of Modi ji on the calendar and the diary with the charkha is another attempt to sell the idea that he alone is responsible for the spread of Khadi. He must understand that, the truth is that this is not just the question of who would model as an icon for popularizing the use of Khadi but tinkering with the history of the country and trying to demolish its icons. When the senior minister from Haryana said that Modi is a greater brand name than Mahatma Gandhi and was not pulled up thereafter; the mind set of Modi led BJP party became clear. The fact is that they are living in dreams and a word of make believe. Play acting is not going to help them replace the icons of Indian History.
We believe that people are not going to appreciate the PM trying to take over the mantle of the Mahatma.
