Opposition Parties Meet President Pranab Mukherjee over the deadlock in the winter session

New Delhi : A delegation of Opposition leaders met President Pranab Mukherjee at Rashtrapati Bhavan and submitted a memorandum to the President over the deadlock in the winter session in the Parliament.

The delegation, led by Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi, comprised of leaders from the Congress, TMC, RJD and the JD(U).

After the meeting, the delegation addressed the media where they stated that they had raised the issue of the government stalling the debate in the Parliament.

“We met the President and we have submitted a memorandum to him. Because of the government’s stand and attitude, the Parliament session could not function. Despite our efforts to hold a debate, the government broke every principle of democracy.  We tried to uphold those principles. This is a failure on part of the government,” stated Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Congress in the Lok Sabha.

Kharge stated that the Opposition leaders voiced their concern before the President and placed the details before him in the form of a memorandum.

JD(U) MP Sharad Yadav hit out at the government for not allowing a debate in Parliament, stating that a lot of issues could have been addressed but the government stalled the debate.

“For the past 4 days, it was the treasury benches that stalled the debate in the Parliament. Why would we not want the Parliament to function? If the Parliament would have functioned, we would have raised a lot of issues that the common man is facing due to demonetisation. The government has not taken any step to initiate the debate,” stated JD(U) MP Sharad Yadav.

The Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha were adjourned sine die on the last day of the winter session of the Parliament
