HYDERABAD: In a surprise visit, Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi joined a protest march past midnight on Saturday, 30th January, 2016 at the Hyderabad Central University campus by students demonstrating against the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula earlier this month. He later spent the night at the campus of Hyderabad Central University. The students held a candlelight vigil for scholar Rohith Vemula, who would have turned 27 today. Just hours before, Shri Rahul Gandhi’s visit, the university changed its interim Vice-Chancellor. In his absence, M Periasamy, the next senior-most professor, will take charge. 

Shri Srivastava, the senior-most professor at the university, was performing the duties after Vice-Chancellor Professor P Appa Rao, named in the police complaint in Rohith Vemula’s death, went on an indefinite leave on Sunday (31st January, 2016). The university’s decision to have Prof Srivastava to officiate in place of Prof Rao had triggered fresh protests. The SC/ST Faculty Forum and SC/ST Officers Forum had expressed “shock” over the decision to appoint Prof Srivastava as officiating Vice-Chancellor and alleged that he headed the Executive Council Sub-Committee “which has been responsible for the death of Rohith.” Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi had earlier gone to Hyderabad on January 18, a day after Shri Vemula was found hanging in a hostel room, and met the research scholar’s family and companions. 

Union Minister Bandaru Dattatreya was named in a police case registered after Shri Vemula’s death. He was accused of writing to Education Minister Smriti Irani and seeking action against the research scholar and his companions for “anti-national activities.” The university suspended MrVemula and his four companions for allegedly assaulting an ABVP leader in August last year. Rohith Vemula hanged himself two weeks after he and four other students were suspended and banned from the hostel, the cafeteria and other common areas for allegedly beating an activist of a rival student union in August. The university later revoked the suspension of Rohith’s comrades, hours after 15 Dalit teachers resigned accusing Union Education Minister Smriti Irani of distorting the facts related to the suicide. 

Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi Joins Hunger Strike at Hyderabad University 

Later, Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi on Saturday (30th January, 2016) re-joined the protest against the suicide of Dalit scholar Rohith Vemula with the students at Hyderabad Central University and participated in the mass hunger strike. He said It is a very interesting day as it is not just Rohith’s birthday but also Mahatma Gandhi’s death anniversary. Sitting on a podium Shri Rahul Gandhi was seen interacting with the four students who had been expelled along with Rohith. In the evening, Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi, Rohith Vemula’s mother ended their hunger strike at University of Hyderabad. 

During the agitation He said “My main opposition to Mr. Modi& RSS is that they are trying to crush spirit of Indian youngsters by imposing one idea from the top”. You will one day find that the very same people who crushed Rohith will be blocking your path to freedom, to progress. Congress Vice President said He further said that “I am here today at the request of Rohith’s friends and family, to stand with them in their fight for justice” “We owe it to him, to memory of Gandhiji, to every single Indian student who dreams of an India free from prejudice & injustice”.
