‘End of an Era in Odisha Politics
The former Governor of Assam and three-time Chief Minister of Odisha, Janaki Ballav Patnaik, passed away at Tirupati in Andhra Pradesh on 21st April, 2015. He was in Tirupati to attend the convocation ceremony of the Rashtriya Sanskrit University.
Leaders cutting across party lines visited his Forest Park residence here after the body was brought from Tirupati.
Shri J.B. Patnaik who was born on 3rd January 1927 was an Indian politician who has been Governor of Assam since 2009. A leader of the Indian National Congress, he was Chief Minister of Odisha from 1980 to 1989 and again from 1995 to 1999, holding that post for the longest time on record before Shri Naveen Patnaik.
After the completion of his early education at Khurda High School, he passed his B.A. degree in Sanskrit from the Utkal University in 1947 and passed his M.A. degree in Political Science from the Banaras Hindu University in 1949. In 1950, he became the President of the Odisha state unit
of the youth wing of the Congress. In 1980, he became the Union Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Labour.
The construction of New Jagannath Sadak (Chandanpur of Puri district to Sarankul of Nayagarh district) is one of his major contribution to the transportation and tourism of Odisha. Congress President, Smt. Sonia Gandhi has condoled the passing away of senior Congress leader Shri JB Patnaik. Having served as the Chief Minister of Odisha thrice, a Union Minister and as a Governor, Shri Patnaik’s public life spread over decades in service of people.Extending her condolences to the family and friends of Shri Patnaik, Smt. Gandhi said that he remained a Congressman till the end and his absence will be felt in the years to come.

Shri Patnaik was a veteran Congress leader, who served the people of this country with dedication, as a three time Chief Minister of Odhisa, Union Ministerand later as Governor. I extend my deepest condolences to his family and loved ones on his demise.
