Kerala Speaker G. Karthikeyan dies in Bengaluru
Thiruvananthapuram: The Speaker of the Kerala Assembly, former minister and Congress leader, G. Karthikeyan, (66) passed away on 7th March, 2015.He was undergoing treatment at the Health Care Global (HCG) hospital in Bengaluru after being diagnosed with cancer of the liver.According to a statement by the hospital, his liver function had deteriorated for which he was on advanced liver support system and showed some improvement. However, his condition deteriorated due to multi-organ failure on Friday night.
Shri Karthikeyan was known for his gentle manners and insightful oratory. He was known for his often different and powerful stances in Kerala’s political landscape.
Born on January 20, 1949, as the son of N.P. Gopala Pillai and Vanajakshiamma, he got involved with the KSU during his student days.He graduated in Commerce and then went on to become a lawyer. He held various positions such as Union General Secretary at the Kerala University, a member of the senate, KSU state president, state president of the Youth Congress, KPCC General Secretary, KPCC Vice President and so on.
He was six times MLA and gained entry into the Assembly for the first time in 1982 from Thiruvananthapuram North. He became minister twice - in 1995 and 2001 - and also had a stint as party chief whip.
As Speaker, Karthikeyan was particular that ministers should respond to queries from MLAs promptly. He also insisted that MLAs should become more active in the affairs of the Assembly.
In a condolence message by the Congress President Smt. Sonia Gandhi to his wife Dr. M.T. Sulekha said “I am deeply grieved to learn of the sad passing away of your husband Shri G. Karthikeyan, Speaker of Kerala Assembly. The Congress Party has lost a dedicated, loyal and able leader, and Kerala has lost one of its most distinguished public figures who was widely respected and admired. A person of great integrity and fine human qualities, he contributed abundantly to the welfare and progress of the state, strengthened the Congress Party and, with his warm personality, won the trust and friendship of people across the political and social spectrum. We will always honour his memory.
I am well aware that words of comfort are of little meaning at this hour, but you must take consolation from the fact that he is now released from his suffering and at peace. At this time of grief, my thoughts and prayers are with you and other members of your family may you find the strength to bear this tragic loss.
In a statement by the Congress Vice President Shri Rahul Gandhi expressed shock and said- My heartfelt condolences on the passing away of Shri G. Karthikeyan. A stalwart of the Kerala Congress. He served party and the people of the state with dedication for over four decades. His loss will be deeply mourned. My thoughts and prayers are with his family in this time of grief.
