Agreement on Rafale
Spokesperson: Shri A.K. Antony and Manish Tewari: Shri Antony said that yesterday an agreement was signed between India and France for the procurement of 36 Rafale aircrafts. Duiring UPA, it was decided to purchase 126 such Aircrafts to meet the urgent operational requirements of the Indian Air Force. As per the Air Force, 126 was the minimum number required for the urgent operational requirements considering the security scenario in the country. Now the NDA Government has finally decided to purchase 36. Is it enough to meet the operational requirements of the Indian Air Force? Sanctioned strength of the Indian Air Force is 42 Squadrons. This sanctioned strength was decided much earlier. Of late, security threat is becoming more and more critical and volatile. Actually now the Air Force needs more. Sanctioned strength is 42 Squadrons and the present availability is 32 Squadrons. By the year 2022, this will be reduced to 25 Squadrons.
