N-E Coordination Committee

Spokesperson: Shri Manish Tewari, Shri Mukul Sangma, Shri Nabam Tuki and Dr. Jayakumar: Shri Tewari said in the past 28 months, one thing has become very evident that both the BJP and the Central Government have been working overtime to destabilize North Eastern India. Their inability to manage the larger geo-strategic environment, has resulted in repeated intrusions by the Chinese into Arunachal Pradesh, there was a major intrusion in June 2016, the other intrusion in Sept 2016, two days back in Demchok in Ladakh, you had another stand-off between the PLA and the Indian Army over the construction of an Irrigation Canal under the MNREGA Scheme. In addition to that, there is the whole spectre of internal subversion, the repeated destabilization of elected Congress Government notwithstanding, very severe strictures which were passed by none other than the Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

Coupled with that, you have this very insidious attempt by the RSS and the BJP to try and communally polarize the North Eastern part of India. The statement by one of the Assam Ministers, who is part of the purported North East Democratic Alliance, is reprehensible, is shameful and deserves to be condemned in the strongest possible terms. So, therefore, in order to protect the very inclusive character of North Eastern India, in order to preserve its unity and diversity, the Congress President and Congress Vice President have reconstituted the North East Co-ordination Committee.

A new Committee has been put in place. It would be convened by Dr. Mukul Sangma, Chief Minister of Meghalaya.

Shri Tewari read out the names of the Members of that Committee and distributed a copy of the same to the Media. Shri Tewari also said that the Meeting will be held in the State by rotation. The senior Congress Leader of that State where meeting will be held will preside over the Meeting.

With this platform, we can evaporate various certain issues concerning the North Eastern Region which has already been mentioned by Shri Manish Ji and Shri Mukul Ji. We have various issues with present Government - not releasing of our rightful grants-in, Finance Commission’s money to the States and they have curtailed down all the important projects and they have also withdrawn our North East Industrial Investment Policy which was granted by the UPA-I Government. Now, instead of strengthening the ‘Look East’ Policy, they are now naming as Act East policy but they are withdrawing all our functions, our development, the policies and programmes. So, this Forum will address policies and the present issues before the Central Government as well as other National forums. Saturday, 5th November, 2016
