Highlights of the Media byte: February 01, 2019

Congress President Shri Rahul Gandhi and various opposition leaders addressed the media after the ‘Save the Nation – Save Democracy’ meeting today at Constitution Club, New Delhi.

Shri Rahul Gandhi said we had a meeting of opposition parties. The meeting was called to discuss issues of EVM, we are going to take that forward.

But two big steps were taken in the meeting which was that all the parties have agreed to discuss in detail two central issues and then one structural issue that are facing the country. The biggest issue in front of the country today is jobs, where Shri Narendra Modi and BJP have failed completely. So, we are going to discuss jobs, agriculture and systematic attack on institutions that the government is carrying out. We have agreed periodic meeting on these issues and develop solutions to these problems. So, overall it was a very good meeting and everybody is quite excited to work.

On EVM, we have put together a document. We are going to Election Commission with this document at 5.30 on Monday and we have some proposals - distinct proposals.

On a question on VVPAT and EVMs, Shri Rahul Gandhi said the main issue with the EVMs is that there is a doubt in the minds of many-many people in this country about the fairness of the functioning of the EVM and so we want to create a back-up system so that people can be certain about what is going on. It is about building the confidence of people in the electoral process and yes we are looking at that measure.

On another question about government’s move for farmers in the budget, Shri Rahul Gandhi said I do not think giving farmer Rs. 17 a day is adequately addressing anything. I think it is an insult to the Indian farmer to turn around and tell him that you are going to give him Rs. 17 every day. There could not be a bigger insult than this. As far as jobs are concerned, everybody knows we are on a 45 years high of unemployment. So, there is complete failure on these two fronts and these fronts are critical fronts.

On a question related to surgical strike and BJP’s claim that opposition is issueless, Shri Gandhi said- The surgical strike is going to happen in the next couple of months with Mr. Modi and the Government. There will be one surgical strike after another on Rafale, on Demonetization, on Job and Agriculture.
